  • Burbage vs AVCC
    22 June 2014

On a wonderfully hot summers day we took on the mighty Burbage. I'm told they have a professional Kiwi who's played Test cricket, fortunately he wasn't selected. Their average age was still around half ours so we started the game with some trepidation. Despite the gap in relative fitness levels (and waist lines) we put up a good fight but, alas, came up short.

  • AVCC v All Cannings
    11 June 2014

This T20 game followed a familiar pattern for readers who have bothered ploughing through the previous 5 matches. AVCC excelled temporarily in the field and then found we had a few too many runs to chase. Should we try and bat first and change a habit? Anyway, we pulled up 34 runs shy of All Cannings 137 off 20, bowled out in the final over.

Avebury vs AVCC report

What a nice ground Avebury is, lovely day too and AVCC registered their first victory, not without a struggle though.

Our bowling was irresistible: Tim Law (4-8-2) picked up two key wickets early on, including a big-name Saffa star pro, Matt White (4-5-0) bowled 4 miserly overs, Ben Jones (4-1-0) 4 more.  Peter Williams (6-23-2) returned to form with a key spell of his own brand of slow loopers (the odd one moves, we think), but pick of the bunch and top of the shop, Ben Eveling came back from the self-imposed wilderness with a storming spell of 5.2 overs - 20 for 5, the club's first ever 5-fer, the club's stato can reveal.  True, not all of them were great balls, but when he gives it a bit of air, chances come.

You have to say 8-9 chances went down, but Matt White caught two good ones at square leg, Bruce one standing up to PW and Rob Hedderwick a key catch at long on.  Avebury were all out for 92 in 28 of their 35.

Pretty straightforward we thought, with just 2.5 an over required, however Avebury bowled their first four, tasty bowlers all the way through their 7 each.  The pitch was sticky and not easy. Tim Gent (15) played a really good innings and Rob (34), a quality knock, and they took the score to 56 for the second wicket, but the pace was only just up with the rate.

The wheels fell off as we slumped to 69 for 6 and 79 for 7.  Needing 22 off the final five, Mark Pugh-Cook (21) and Matt White (7) saw us home with 5 balls to spare.  Relief all round, and I'd like to say, "never in doubt".
