  • Burbage vs AVCC
    22 June 2014

On a wonderfully hot summers day we took on the mighty Burbage. I'm told they have a professional Kiwi who's played Test cricket, fortunately he wasn't selected. Their average age was still around half ours so we started the game with some trepidation. Despite the gap in relative fitness levels (and waist lines) we put up a good fight but, alas, came up short.

  • AVCC v All Cannings
    11 June 2014

This T20 game followed a familiar pattern for readers who have bothered ploughing through the previous 5 matches. AVCC excelled temporarily in the field and then found we had a few too many runs to chase. Should we try and bat first and change a habit? Anyway, we pulled up 34 runs shy of All Cannings 137 off 20, bowled out in the final over.

AVCC v All Cannings

This T20 game followed a familiar pattern for readers who have bothered ploughing through the previous 5 matches. AVCC excelled temporarily in the field and then found we had a few too many runs to chase. Should we try and bat first and change a habit? Anyway, we pulled up 34 runs shy of All Cannings 137 off 20, bowled out in the final over.

Tim Law (4-18-1) and local superhero (kept his blue pants out of sight) Joe Wookey (4-15-3) bowled 6 tight overs at the beginning and ACCC crumbled to 25 for 5.  However, we then felt a bit sorry for them and let them rebuild.  We welcomed back Nigel Spink who bowled a good spell (haven't bowled for ages) of off-spin (21 off 4).  Hugh Morrison (2-12-2) and Billy King (3-15-0) (Amesbury) bowled tidily on their first AVCC outing - it was good to see them play.  The truth is that 7-8-9 for All Cannings were a bit better than 4-5-6 and we were slow to spot it and we had a few "ragged" overs in the middle, shall we say.

It turned out the All Cannings actually had 3-4 first teamers playing.  The openers were (1) decidedly quick, (2) turned the ball some distance.  Opener Mike Parr (12), against a bit of pace, suddenly looked very comfortable and timed a couple of sweet drives off his legs.   Our blue-panted wonder (49) scored 25 good runs before retiring and then return to hit 3 great sixes off the penultimate over.  Tim Gent (5) looked classy, but couldn't muster boundary scoring shots.  The rest of us struggled against more competitive bowling and fielding than we had been able to display.

The pitch played well, the pavilion is coming together.  The Ship served beer.

Keep Club Day - 13 July in mind, do you have an under 12 who would like to try pairs cricket at 4pm, let me know.
