12 May AVCC v Marden

On a sunny day on the 12th May, we welcomed Marden to play the annual Richard Cox Memorial Trophy which we lost last year. 35 overs game, with a nice bunch of guys we know well, and was our first home game of the season. Pitch was beautifully prepared by Tim, Angus and co. and was the smallest boundary we have used. After the rains, the pitch looked good, but we could feel it had a soft top layer and therefore bounce might be low and variable. Marden batted first. Their 2 Trowbridge first teamers mastered the pitch and our bowlers and scored 78 and 29 comfortably. However, we got their total side out for 129, including 7 extras. This was down to fine bowling and strong fielding. We dropped a few and it was no surprise that nearly all the wickets were clean bowled. Jack Campbell bowled their top batsman, Ish got the other Trowbridge player, and wickets fell at regular intervals to Stephen Flowers (5-1-20), Matt Haslett (5-1-17), Graham Newland (6-2-18), Ish (4-1-29), Jack Campbell (3-1-11), Shane Williams (2-1-8) and Angus Harley (2-2-2). We regained the Trophy with a 130-6, with strong performances by Shane Williams (21), Matt Haslett (top scorer on 36), Jack Campbell (23) and Ish (23) in 27 overs. After this, we enjoyed socialising with Marden at our ground with beers and a belated tea, and it proved a good and convivial end to the evening and a good day of cricket. First win of the season, and good to have the Trophy back.
