Urchfont v AVCC

AVCC glory hunters chased down 151 in 35 overs with 5 overs but only 1 wicket spare. Everyone got a bat, but it was a close shave.

The fielding/bowling side did well to restrict Urchfont on a good hard track, fast outfield in bright sunshine.  This was helped somewhat by Malcolm, an old codger opening the innings and staying throughout scoring 39 runs.  Some anchor, a little on the heavy side.  Harry Flack (Upavon) topped and tailed the innings with good spells of left-arm seam, picking up two early wickets.  Graham Newland produced a probing opening spell.  Ben Eveling showed flashes of his old leggie form, coming back from a much-talked about injury.  Greg Caswell produced an excellent four overs to restrict star bat David Bromley, assisted by hang-over (young-uns eh - didn't have the AVCC commitment and fitness-first attitude).

Dominic P-C bowled tidily and should have added to his growing AVCC haul.  But the pick were Alex Brown (Enford) and Peter Williams  both bowling slow wobblers who picked up five wickets between them for not very many.  Top catch in the deep from Alex on the run, clutching at it as if it were a special lady! to remove star bat.  Paddy Bond also bowled well and caught one that surprised him.  Fielding on the whole was good, aside from a couple of balls that Peter Williams managed to hoof over the boundary - football season has definitely started.  Top sledging of his own team provided by Tim Gent mostly from deep long leg - such a mild mannered man we thought when we first met him.  Bruce Carter kept tidily and gets better and better.

The batting started well with Greg Caswell (37) and Simon Borthwick (33) smiting to all corners.  66 for one after 10.  However they both got a little ambitious.  Harry Flack (14) show flashes of form at 5.  Things declined from there to 95 for 5 and 123 for 9, including Graham calling Ben (coming back from injury, remember) for one that wasn't there.  He took it like a grown up.  This left the skipper with a few thumps, a number of which went straight to the fielders and Dominic P-C with some delicate touches to see the team home.  Who was worried!

Urchfont were a pleasure to play against and generous hosts, and beer, sausages and chips were to be had at the local hostelry.
